DUDHNOI: A year-long programme to mark the 50th anniversary of Dudhnoi College, a traditional higher education institute in Goalpara district, kicked off from Thursday.

Dr Upen Rabha Hakasam, president, College Management Committee, and Professor, Gauhati University, Tankeshwar Rabha, Chief Executive Member, Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council, Dr Lalit Chandra Rabha, Principal, Dudhnoi College, and other dignitaries hoisted 50 flags to mark the launch of the year-long golden jubilee year programme. This was followed by a memorial by retired vice-president of the college, Khirod Khakhalary.

On the other hand, the foundation stone of the permanent symbol of the college was laid by Tankeshwar Rabha, Chief Executive Member of the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council. The foundation stone of the bust of the college's first permanent principal, Karuna Kant Rabha was laid by Dudhnoi assembly constituency MLA Jadab Swargiary. In addition, the college student rest room built with a grant from the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council was inaugurated by Tankeshwar Rabha.

The open meeting was held under the chairmanship of Tankeshwar Rabha. In his speech at the open meeting, Dr Upen Rabha Hakasam said, "Dudhnoi is a place dominated by Rabha and Bodo population. This college is running despite shortage of teachers and lack of infrastructure. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and education minister Dr Ranoj Pegu have been urged to upgrade the college as an independent university."

In his speech at the meeting, Education Minister Dr Ranoj Pegu said that the national education policy has already been approved by the government. "Colleges must also make arrangements so that students can get employment through alternative means so that the present education system is not job-oriented only," he said.

The Education Minister further said that most of the students fail in English, Mathematics and Science. Students need to know English if they go to study medical science or engineering. So from now on, students will have to learn mathematics and science subjects in English from Class III to Class XII.

The Education Minister announced the construction of a state-of-the-art auditorium in the college and called upon the college authorities to continue the work that should be taken up for upgradation of the college as an independent college.
